Vipps MobilePay: What the Merger Means for Online Stores

Vipps and MobilePay are now fully integrated. We look at what this means for Norwegian and Nordic online stores, and what you should update.

After several years of gradual integration, Vipps MobilePay is now a fully unified platform. For Norwegian online stores, this brings both new opportunities and some practical changes that need to be addressed.

The New Reality

Vipps MobilePay now operates as a unified payment platform across Norway, Denmark, and Finland. With over 11 million users in the Nordics, it is the largest mobile payment solution in the region.

What Has Changed?

  • One API: The new Vipps MobilePay ePayment API replaces the separate integrations. Existing Vipps integrations still work but should be upgraded.
  • Nordic checkout: Customers from Denmark and Finland can now pay with MobilePay in Norwegian online stores without friction.
  • New pricing model: Transaction costs have been adjusted. For most Norwegian online stores, the change is minimal, but check your agreement.
  • Recurring payments: Subscription and recurring payments have received better support with shared infrastructure.

What Should You Do?

1. Update Your Integration

If you are still using the old Vipps eCommerce API, you should migrate to the new ePayment API. The old endpoints will continue to work during a transition period, but new features will only come to the new API.

For WooCommerce users: Update to the Vipps MobilePay plugin version 3.x or later. It supports the new API automatically.

For Magento users: The Vipps module for Magento 2 has been updated. Ensure you are running the latest version via Composer.

For custom solutions: Read the migration guide at developer.vippsmobilepay.com. Most changes are backward compatible.

2. Enable Nordic Payments

If you sell to Danish or Finnish customers, you can now accept MobilePay payments without additional integration. This is configured in your Vipps MobilePay portal.

3. Update the Checkout Flow

The new checkout experience supports faster authentication and “Express Checkout” with stored addresses. Test that the flow works optimally in your store:

  • Verify that the payment button displays the correct logo (new Vipps MobilePay logo)
  • Confirm that the redirect flow works on both mobile and desktop
  • Test with both Norwegian and foreign phone numbers if you sell across the Nordics

4. Consider Vipps Login

With the unified platform, Vipps Login now supports Nordic users. A “Log in with Vipps” button can reduce friction during account creation and increase conversion.

The Effect on Conversion

Our clients who have implemented the new checkout flow report:

  • 8–12% increase in completed purchases on mobile
  • Lower abandonment rate in checkout (down 5–7 percentage points)
  • Faster checkout: Average time from cart to payment down from 2.1 to 1.4 minutes

What About Klarna and Others?

Vipps MobilePay does not replace the need for other payment methods. Klarna is still important for customers who want installment payments, and cards (Visa/Mastercard) remain relevant for international customers. But as the primary payment method for Norwegian customers, Vipps MobilePay has further strengthened its position.

Our recommendation: Offer Vipps MobilePay as the first choice, Klarna for installments, and cards as fallback. This combination covers 95% of Norwegian online shoppers.
